What is Dairy Farm Machinery?

A dairy farm is a specialized farm where cattle are raised for their milk. Specialized equipment is needed that is not normally found on regular farms. What is dairy farm machinery?

Dairy Farm Machinery

A dairy farm raises and maintains cattle. The cattle are kept for their milk. The milk is used for a wide variety of dairy related products. In order to get the milk from the cow and prepare it for use by humans requires a whole range of equipment that is not normally found on a farm devoted to raising crops. What is this special dairy farm machinery?

Most people have an image of the milkmaid sitting on her small three legged stool and milking the cow using a wooden bucket. For many years this was the fairly standard way of milking. On the modern dairy farm of today specialized milking equipment has replaced the milkmaid and her bucket. Modern milking systems remove the milk from the cow and transfer it into coolers. The important considerations in modern milking systems are sterilization and overall cleanliness. Specialized equipment is used to keep the systems flushed out and cleaned in between use.

Most dairy farms do not process the milk at the farm itself. The milking machines transfer the milk into holding tanks where it is examined and tested. The milk is then pumped into transfer trucks that take it to an actual dairy where it is processed into a wide variety of products. The dairy farm machinery mostly consists of automatic milking machines, cooler tanks to hold the milk until it is transferred to the dairy trucks, and equipment used for cleaning and sterilization of all the systems that come into actual contact with the milk.

Many dairy farms grow hay and other crops used for feed for the milk cows. Even if the feed is not actually grown on the farm itself, they need to be stored there. This means that much of the same type of equipment that is needed on any farm are also needed and used on the dairy farm. Normally, these pieces of equipment are not considered dairy farm machinery.

The modern dairy farm has begun to use computer controlled equipment that measures the milk production and automatically tests the quality before it is even shipped. The milk is kept in cooling tanks until it is ready to be transferred. All equipment is kept clean and sterilized frequently. Even the cows enjoy air conditioning in their stalls during the summer to increase their milk production. The use of modern technology has produced dairy farm machinery that has made the poor milk maid and the three legged stool very obsolete.
